Who is Aurobindo Ghoshe? What are they interests and works in Indian History? Childhood, Family, Education, and other Life Experience

Aurobindo Ghoshe, who later came to be known as Sri Aurobindo Maharishi, was a great revolutionary, patriot, philosopher, mystic, poet, yogi and humanist. He was born at Kolkata in 1872, but most of his education took place in England.

He studied there at Cambridge. Later he returned to India and became a professor first at Broda and then at Kolkata. He was a great linguist and knew French, English, and Bengali etc. He taught French and English and the later was for him very natural because it was his second language during his childhood and boyhood.

He was great power of English as a medium of exchange of ideas, expression propagation and instruction and used it to his great advantage. He was a well known teacher, thinker, writer, editor and voracious reader. His students were deeply influenced by his high moral character, learning, ideals and patriotism.

He represented the best of the Orient and the West in his ideas, philosophies and practical life. He inspired his students with courage, self-respect, confidence and feelings of sacrifice and devotion to the motherland. He used both his pen and tongue to carry his audience with him on matters of politics, religion, philosophy, education and culture.

He was deeply influenced by the dynamic and revolutionary personality of BAL Gangadhar Tilak. He met for the first time in 1902 during the Ahmadabad Congress Session. It was Tilak who inspired him to join the Indian freedom Struggle. “Political rights would have to be fought for” declared Tilak. Tilak brought radicalism and militant nationalism in Indian politics. He had joined the Congress again in 1916 at Lucknow.

He along with Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal was the chief exponent of new wave of militant nationalism. They wanted the Indians themselves to fight for their cause of freedom. They pleaded for self-respect, self confidence and self-help for fighting the utter selfish and ruthless foreign rulers.

They invited people to come forward and make scarifies for the noble cause of freedom. They believed in full freedom “Swaraj” and rejected an idea of foreign help and support. Their faith in the masse, particularly of the peasant and workers was film like a rock. The ideas and practices of these extremist leaders suited so well the temperament and thinking of young Aurobindo Ghoshe.

The partition of Bengal came as great shock to all the leaders and the masses alike. It gave rise to a mass movement. The anti- partition movement was launched in 1905. It bought Aurobindo in the thick or the freedom movement.

He became one of the leading figures of the anti-partition movement in Bengal. He, with the support of Tilak and Like-minded other leaders, decided on a showdown with the moderates at the 1907 session of All India Congress at Surat.

Maulana Abdul Kalam Azad also helped him to extend and spread his revolutionary activities outside Bengal. Aurobindo wrote many fiery articles in his “Bande Matram” on boycott of the foreign goods and militant actions to achieve complete freedom.

He was arrested and sent behind the bars several times. Thus, he became a great rallying point of radicalisms and militant patriotism in Bengal. He spread the message of Swedeshi, Swaraj, and boycott of foreign things through his fiery speeches and writings in a very convincing way throughout Bengal. For him political freedom was the first priority because “Other freedom loses” said “their sap and savour so long as Swaraj is denied to us.

Freedoms Movements, Hinduism, and Fought for Spiritual Freedom, Awakening

He believed that a mass upsurge and movement of the entire nation was the need of the hour. He wanted that farmers, workers, students, teachers and all other people joined together to make the freedom movements a mighty and irresistible force. He also wanted to instill in the people the essence of Hinduism which believed in the unity and ones of life and indivisible divinity.

He believed that spiritual freedom and awakening was as necessary as political freedom. Later he renounced politics and active national movement in preference to spiritualism, yoga and sadhna. It is he who later perfected the life and technique of yoga in his doctrine of supermind. Super mind means a superman who has divinized his mind and body in relation to God.

Vedanta and Spiritualism

Super mind of a superman who seeks to divine the whole cosmos. Thus, a highly spiritualized individual as a superman can become the instrument of universal nirvana and salvation. Such an individual, by virtue of his great merits and intense sadhna, sends out mighty vibrations of spiritualizing influence on the whole cosmos with a view to uplifting the whole humanity, he wanted to energies and rejuvenate the modern men and women though yoga, Vedanta and spiritualism.

He wanted to help the entire humanity outgrow is limitations through yoga-sadhna. He preached “love and oneness” to rid the world of it evil practices. He made us aware of our glorious past and the wonders that can be achieved now and still more glorious future.

Aurobindo Believed in Spiritualism, Yoga, Meditation, Books on Spiritualism, Mother

He retreated to Pondicherry in 1910, following his political trial and established his ashram in 1926. His spiritualism is based on yoga, meditation and modern science and therefore is quite practicable. He authored many books on spiritualism, moral philosophy etc.

Chief among these books are: The Life Divine, Aurobindo on Himself and passed on a French woman, popularly known as the “Mother”. She also died in 1973 at the very mature age of 97.The Ashram is fully dedicated to the cultural, educational and spiritual activities. It is visited by thousands of people from all over the country and abroad every year.

International Community Center (Auroviile)

Auroviile, an international community center, at Pondicherry was designed by the French architect Ronger Anger in memory of the Maharishi. It is an international worship where people from all over the world are welcome. They can live there and practice yoga sadhna, spiritualism scientific research, fine arts, cultural and educational activities in accordance with charter of Auroviile.

The cosmopolitan community of Auroviile lives here in harmony with each other above all creeds, nationalities, casts and classes guided by the spiritual teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the mother.

Founded by the mother, it sprawls over 800 hectares of land on the Tindivanam Road. In the centre of the town is imposing Mattri Mandir. Auroviile has now become a national symbol and a living example of India’s commitment to world peace, harmony and oneness of life.
